Greyhound Adoption Center: "Cage-Free Animal Retreat" This non-profit animal rescue and adoption center had problems with overcrowding, an overextended volunteer staff, and a lack of privacy that stressed out the already traumatized dogs. The ingenious solution to these problems was to design multiple 11x11 “doggie duplexes” where each animal could enjoy their own comfortable home out of the line of sight of other dogs, with open access to their own private yard. These strategically-placed duplexes eliminated the need for staff to take animals out for bathroom breaks and also provided ample natural light with skylights and clerestory walls to calm the animals. Non-rotting materials such as cement and steel were selected to be durable, low maintenance and easy to clean. The achieved effect was a minimalistic pragmatic structure that soothed the maltreated animals. For more information about this project, check out the Greyhound Adoption Center's website. |
